Clearing Up Misconceptions about Feminism

by: Tan Triesia

Feminism is a series of social, political, and ideological movements that aim to establish and achieve gender equality in all aspects. The feminist movement began in the late 18th century and developed rapidly in the 20th century.

Feminism is not just about women, but also about other genders in society. However, there are many misconceptions about feminism. Misconceptions such as feminism being about women vs men are still common. In fact, on the contrary, the main goal of feminism is gender equality.

Such misconceptions stem from ignorance. Many misinterpret the feminist movement as a movement of competition between women and men. They often refuse to learn anything about feminism. Here are some misconceptions about feminism:

    1. Feminism is man-hatred

Feminism is a movement that fights for equal rights for all humans of all genders, not just women. Feminism is about fighting patriarchy and matriarchy, breaking down gender discrimination, and even helping to bring awareness to the issue of gender inequality among men.

Emma Watson once said in her speech for the HeForShe campaign in the UN, "Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too."

     2. Feminism wants women to be superior and dominate men

When feminists talk about the injustices and inequalities experienced by women, many assume that it is done to position women above men. Feminism only wants justice and equality, and to eliminate the disadvantages experienced by all people regardless of gender.

    3. Men can't be feminists

Being a feminist has nothing to do with one's gender. Regardless of gender, one can be a feminist and play a role in eliminating gender inequality. By becoming a feminist, men can fight for women's rights as well as men's rights and remove any form of stigma imposed on men.

We don't talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes, but I can see that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence. If men don't have to be aggressive to be accepted, women won't feel compelled to be submissive. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong. It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum, instead of as two sets of opposing ideals. If we stop defining each by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are, we can all be freer." said Emma Watson in her HeForShe speech.

Despite misconceptions, feminism exists to fight for gender justice and equality in a society that needs help from everyone. Feminism wants everyone to feel safe.

We are in desperate need of feminism.

Good Damage: Justifying the Trauma, Does it All Happen for a Reason?

by: Rebecca Karenia “All the damage I got isn't good damage.. it's just.. damage. I haven't got nothing out of it and all those years I was miserable was for nothing.” The quote you see above was taken from Diane's monologue from the show Bojack Horseman. The character Diane Nguyen, a 40 year old aspiring writer, was contemplating whether she should continue writing her first book or stop altogether since it does not serve any purpose to all the hardships and trauma she went through. Sounds familiar? Let's dive deep into it! Oftentimes you may find yourself thinking that the trauma you’ve gone through in the past, happens to you for a reason. It must’ve happened with a purpose, right? And so in order to serve this purpose, you forge strength and resilience to become someone different- someone who learned from their mistakes. Someone who knows better about the truth and harshness of the real world. You define your own suffering and give it a whole new meaning so th

by: Ilma Rosyidah Everyone has their own timeline. But the feeling of being left behind becomes uncontrollable when everyone else seems to be reaching another stage in life while you still don’t know what to do. Feeling left behind in some ways can lead you to lose your freedom.    The days go by so fast before you might even notice your New Year’s resolutions still showing no progress. At the same time, the idea of breaking the distance through technology makes you easily exposed to everybody’s life, even the ones you don't really know. You see beautiful pictures and various achievements that other people have. Then when you look in the mirror, you start to second guess your worth. “Mirror mirror on the wall, I guess I am worse than everyone else because they are doing better in life ,” you might hear.  I think I was in yesterday 'Cause everybody walks too fast -My Time, by Jungkook BTS- Your friend is attending college while reality is holding you back to do the same.
