by: Ilma Rosyidah

Good Damage: Justifying the Trauma, Does it All Happen for a Reason?

by: Rebecca Karenia “All the damage I got isn't good damage.. it's just.. damage. I haven't got nothing out of it and all those years I was miserable was for nothing.” The quote you see above was taken from Diane's monologue from the show Bojack Horseman. The character Diane Nguyen, a 40 year old aspiring writer, was contemplating whether she should continue writing her first book or stop altogether since it does not serve any purpose to all the hardships and trauma she went through. Sounds familiar? Let's dive deep into it! Oftentimes you may find yourself thinking that the trauma you’ve gone through in the past, happens to you for a reason. It must’ve happened with a purpose, right? And so in order to serve this purpose, you forge strength and resilience to become someone different- someone who learned from their mistakes. Someone who knows better about the truth and harshness of the real world. You define your own suffering and give it a whole new meaning so th...

Brutally Honest yet Encouraging Lyrics from Taylor Swift, “You’re On Your Own, Kid”

by: Asti Hayan It takes endless learning and unlearning to figure out what we want to do with our life. The experience of losing and growing while navigating our life is beautifully written by Taylor Swift in her song, You're on Your Own, Kid . The song features many personal and vulnerable lyrics that might resonate with all of us. Here are some takes of her lyrics from which we can learn a thing or two. "I didn't choose this town, I dream of getting out" Sometimes where we are and what we become right now is something that we don’t expect it to be. We yearn for something bigger and better, we have so much in store that we believe the world has yet to see. We dream of getting out. H owever, little did we know, we can bloom here in this very place. We don’t need to wait to get out, we just need to constantly grow while also living our life.  "My dreams aren't rare" We are just like everybody else trying to get a hold of this life. We dream, desire things...

Its most recent film adaptation in 2019, starring amongst them are Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson, and directed by Greta Gerwig was its seventh film adaptation of the novel. It follows the lives of the March women: Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth. Each sister struggles with the hardships of daily life, growing up, and their father being away at war - taking place in the middle of America’s civil war, sometime in the early 1860s.  Whether you have personally read the novel or watched the film (or both), there are essential life lessons that you can pick from them! Passion with Persistence is Key Jo's fiery, headstrong personality gets her in a lot of trouble. Her success is due to her ability to balance compassion and perseverance. With only her passion, she would have given up on rejection and probably isolated everyone in her life. She str...
