Rilakkuma and Kaoru: Heartwarming and Relatable Series

by: Tan Triesia

“Every flower blooms in a different period.”

Rilakkuma and Kaoru is a breath of fresh air–a heartwarming and cute, calming, and beautifully thoughtful show. The show follows Kaoru, a single and working-class woman, going through the everyday challenges of her life with her animal friends, Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma, and Kiiroitori.

Kaoru passes through her young adulthood without many close friends, lacks relationships, and is not really interested in her job. Her animal friends helped Kaoru as she went through everyday frustrations and found her self-worth.

The life of Kaoru highlights every small and relatable moment in life. We learn the same lessons as Kaoru throughout the year, fully understanding that new challenges will come.

Accepting Change

In one of the episodes, the apartment they live in will be demolished. Kaoru searches for a new place as the situation forces her. Kaoru and her animal friends must leave their lovely apartment with so many memories and say goodbye to their neighbor, Tokio.

That’s the way things are going. Nothing stays the same forever. Things will change as time goes by. We have to accept and deal with life changes to grow as better people.

Deal with Loneliness and Finances

Kaoru struggles with her finances after she keeps ordering exercise equipment online to see the cute deliveryman. Things got worse after a reduction in her winter bonus. Seeing Kaoru struggle, Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma, and Kiiroitori search for part-time jobs. Meanwhile, Kaoru fantasizes about changing her personality when she finds out that she’s the subject of office gossip about not inviting her to their get-togethers.

Kaoru’s life portrayed the reality of adult life. When we become adults, we will deal with these things. Financial problems, loneliness because of not having a partner, and feeling like you are being left behind. The pressure and rejection can make you feel lonely. But you have to remember that you're not alone.

We All Have Bad Days

After experiencing bad luck in the last few days of summer, Kaoru sees a psychic who gave her a rosary to help her find a way out of bad luck.

It turns out that it was just a bad day. We all have a bad day. Sometimes, we need those bad days to help us appreciate the good ones. We all have days like that.

With simple and ordinary life, Kaoru learned to truly love herself and appreciate the little things in life, reminding us that despite the hardships one will face, life is ultimately beautiful and worth living.

Good Damage: Justifying the Trauma, Does it All Happen for a Reason?

by: Rebecca Karenia “All the damage I got isn't good damage.. it's just.. damage. I haven't got nothing out of it and all those years I was miserable was for nothing.” The quote you see above was taken from Diane's monologue from the show Bojack Horseman. The character Diane Nguyen, a 40 year old aspiring writer, was contemplating whether she should continue writing her first book or stop altogether since it does not serve any purpose to all the hardships and trauma she went through. Sounds familiar? Let's dive deep into it! Oftentimes you may find yourself thinking that the trauma you’ve gone through in the past, happens to you for a reason. It must’ve happened with a purpose, right? And so in order to serve this purpose, you forge strength and resilience to become someone different- someone who learned from their mistakes. Someone who knows better about the truth and harshness of the real world. You define your own suffering and give it a whole new meaning so th

Finding the Freedom in Feeling Left Behind

But the feeling of being left behind becomes uncontrollable when everyone else seems to be reaching another stage in life while you still don’t know what to do. Feeling left behind in some ways can lead you to lose your freedom.    The days go by so fast before you might even notice your New Year’s resolutions still showing no progress. At the same time, the idea of breaking the distance through technology makes you easily exposed to everybody’s life, even the ones you don't really know. You see beautiful pictures and various achievements that other people have. Then when you look in the mirror, you start to second guess your worth. “Mirror mirror on the wall, I guess I am worse than everyone else because they are doing better in life ,” you might hear.  I think I was in yesterday 'Cause everybody walks too fast -My Time, by Jungkook BTS- Your friend is attending college while reality is holding you back to do the same.
