Life is Like a Box of Chocolates

by: Aribah Shafa source: BuzzFeed      Who here hasn’t heard of Forrest Gump? The 1994 movie starring Tom Hanks is considered a masterpiece with outstanding performances that remain etched in cinematographic history. Aside from depicting everyday drama that so many people can relate to, the movie itself is a major life lesson - we can always succeed if we believe in ourselves, but we also need someone to encourage us and not give up on us when we’re in doubt!      This movie portrays Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks, as a kind-hearted boy with marginal intelligence, often bullied because of his physical disability and low IQ. Encouraged by his mother, Forrest eventually finds his way in life and proves that despite what anyone says he is capable of achieving success. Even though not many show him kindness, Forrest keeps on being the good man his mother taught him to be, doesn’t let anything interfere with his happiness, helps whenever possible, and never ceases to follow his dreams.

Be Yourself and Stay Unique

by: Nala Zakina Being a woman born in a patriarchal environment is not easy. But that's not a reason to give up and give in to the situation. We must have strong internal and external motivation for adjustment. We are not able to control external factors or the environment around us. But we can control ourselves in responding to it. Those who have a 'why' to live, can endure almost any 'how'.              - Imaz   When we are able to accept ourselves as a whole, we will not be afraid to support ourselves. It doesn't matter who goes. Don't expect empathy from others. And it doesn't matter if they like us or don't like us. Because we just enjoy life and fall in love with what we do every day. Stay the best version of yourself and don't compete with anyone. Now is not the time to compare. We are fully aware that weaknesses and strengths are inherent in humans. Therefore, the best focus is not on the shortcomings that we cannot change, but on the adv

Stress Won't Make You Sick

by: Joan Ivanka Imagine a situation in which your fight or flight response is triggered. Let’s say you’re seriously scared of bugs and a big one just falls on your hand in the middle of a conversation.  Your adrenaline would spike, and your heart would begin to race. You might scream and try to shake it off, or you migh t tense up and pray it falls off by itself. In any case, the moment you saw the bug land on you, your brain released the hormone cortisol, signaling the body to take immediate action - fight, flee, or freeze. In other words, the cortisol hormone prepares your body to act quickly in response to threats. This is why it is called the fear/stress hormone. There are times when stress can be helpful. It gives you a burst of energy when you need it to get things done. But, like with all good things, there is such a thing as too much. We've all at least heard one doctor say "stress makes you sick." And it is usually true. In fact, stress has been linked to sever

It's A Brand New Day!

By: Beth Victoria Suwito Every day is a brand new day itself. A fresh start and a clean slate. Though, sometimes we forget about that. Sometimes we wallow in yesterday’s despair and think of today as nothing but an extension of yesterday. Even so, this is a reminder that your week isn’t determined by one bad day!  If you had a pretty bad yesterday, start the day by listening to “Brand New Day” by Cherrybelle to lift up your mood for today. Why that song specifically? Well, here are a few lyrics from that song that can really help you brighten your day! 1. “Tunjukkan dunia kau pasti bisa” / “Show the world that you can” This is for those times when you feel like you’re not enough or just unmotivated. You have to remember that you can and that you are capable . Society can really bring us down with their expectations and standards but this is your chance to show them otherwise. Show them that you can! 2. “Just be strong, just be brave, and be sure, yes you can” The lyric is pretty self-

Clearing Up Misconceptions about Feminism

by: Tan Triesia Feminism is a series of social, political, and ideological movements that aim to establish and achieve gender equality in all aspects. The feminist movement began in the late 18th century and developed rapidly in the 20th century. Feminism is not just about women, but also about other genders in society. However, there are many misconceptions about feminism. Misconceptions such as feminism being about women vs men are still common. In fact, on the contrary, the main goal of feminism is gender equality. Such misconceptions stem from ignorance. Many misinterpret the feminist movement as a movement of competition between women and men. They often refuse to learn anything about feminism. Here are some misconceptions about feminism:     1. Feminism is man-hatred Feminism is a movement that fights for equal rights for all humans of all genders, not just women. Feminism is about fighting patriarchy and matriarchy, breaking down gender discrimination, and even helping to bring

Motivation is Overrated!

by: Cindy Aurelia The mountain is you, I know it’s very true. Have you ever wondered how some of your favorite role models or actresses gain their motivation? Through the lens of social media, it may seem like they own a future-perfect life that everyone ever dreamed of. Multiple tiered houses, catching private jets, and front-line designer items.  Sometimes, we caught ourselves comparing our lives with theirs. We might wonder, “Why can’t I be the same?” or wish we were as privileged as them.  A quote by Steve Furtick was a powerful reminder for us, “The reason we struggle with insecurity is that we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”  We need to realize most of the time, the “life” they’re showing was only tiny bits of highlights of their life. Deep inside, they also have their struggles, breakdowns, and challenges that they must overcome. It’s just they didn’t show everything on the camera.  With this, we gather a new question. “How can they be so moti

Life Lessons from 'Little Women'

by: Aribah Shafa Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women was first published in the late 1860s. Even after 162 years later, the book remains remarkably popular. Its most recent film adaptation in 2019, starring amongst them are Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson, and directed by Greta Gerwig was its seventh film adaptation of the novel. It follows the lives of the March women: Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth. Each sister struggles with the hardships of daily life, growing up, and their father being away at war - taking place in the middle of America’s civil war, sometime in the early 1860s.  Whether you have personally read the novel or watched the film (or both), there are essential life lessons that you can pick from them! Passion with Persistence is Key Jo's fiery, headstrong personality gets her in a lot of trouble. Her success is due to her ability to balance compassion and perseverance. With only her passion, she would have given up on rejection and probably isolated everyone in her life. She str

Finding the Freedom in Feeling Left Behind

by: Ilma Rosyidah Everyone has their own timeline. But the feeling of being left behind becomes uncontrollable when everyone else seems to be reaching another stage in life while you still don’t know what to do. Feeling left behind in some ways can lead you to lose your freedom.    The days go by so fast before you might even notice your New Year’s resolutions still showing no progress. At the same time, the idea of breaking the distance through technology makes you easily exposed to everybody’s life, even the ones you don't really know. You see beautiful pictures and various achievements that other people have. Then when you look in the mirror, you start to second guess your worth. “Mirror mirror on the wall, I guess I am worse than everyone else because they are doing better in life ,” you might hear.  I think I was in yesterday 'Cause everybody walks too fast -My Time, by Jungkook BTS- Your friend is attending college while reality is holding you back to do the same.
